Free Resources to Help You Get Started With Social Media

I’ve been using social media to help promote art, which was one of the reasons why I was selected to be in the Twitter/Art+Social Media Show at the Diane Farris Gallery April 1 to May 1, 2010.

Social media combines of new technology and new ways to work with customers helps us feel like we belong to a unique community thanks to free tools like blogs, podcasts, and video sharing, as well as being able to provide feedback, organization and promotion.

Blogs are websites that are organized by posts that are individual news stories, like articles in the paper. Bloggers simply fill out a form like this to post a new story. With the click of a button, the blog post appears at the top of the web page, just above yesterday’s news and allows comments to be left by readers and makes news a two-way interaction. WordPress is a publishing tool with plugins and templates that enables you to set up your own website with little time and money. You can provide information that your audience would find valuable and that builds trust.

TWITTER

Twitter is a micro-blogging platform that allows you to create 140 character messages that are “tweeted” to Twitter Followers. You can link Twitter to Facebook status updates to keep your social media presence up to date. The little messages from Twitter paints a picture of friends, family, co-workers and others in your community.

FACEBOOK

Facebook allows you to create profiles with photos, interests, contact information and other details. You can socialize publicly on walls, privately with email or with chat. You can also create and join groups and pages.

Here are tips to get more Facebook Friends:

A Facebook Page is kind of like a blog. It gets updated by you, just like a website would. Use it for: a broad product category (like boots, VHS tapes or swizzle sticks), a state of being (like “Being Bored,” “Italian Americans,” “Being over 6’0” tall), a declaration (like “I love bread” or “I hate bad drivers”).

A Facebook Group is kind of like a forum. It gets moderated by you, and its focus are the conversations that are posted to it. Use it for: a cause (anti or for something), a local community (your town’s baseball league), a discussion forum (religion and politics always fits the bill), a protest (“no more taxes for the lower-middle class in [your town]”)
